we’ll never know

a bicycle in good conditions, just in from an overhaul by a qualified technician. i brought it home, he toured the block twice, than he gave up – too many stray dogs barking, he said. 4 years in a basement and that beautiful bike is a wreck. flat tires no pump can help; rusty chain; jammed brakes. unusable and beyond repair, unless i take it back to that repairman. worth it? i’d vote no, but teenagers tend to hate you if you say no to them.

why the hell didn’t he want it and keep it running for all those years? why now? what was the  last moment when down there, in the dark, there was still a functional bike, and when exactly ticked the first minute when you could say it’s no longer usable?
